ISTA (International Safe Transit Association), the International Safe Transit Association, is an international non-profit organization dedicated to improving the safety of transportation packaging and reducing product losses during transportation. ISTA has developed a series of packaging safety transportation test procedures, such as ISTA 1 series (not simulated transportation test at all), ISTA 2 series (partially simulated transportation test), ISTA 3 series (completely simulated transportation test), ISTA 6 series (member customized test procedures) and so on.
The main test series of ISTA are as follows:
ISTA 1A (≤68kg, single package, regardless of package type)
ISTA 3A series ISTA 3A (≤70 kg, packages shipped in parcels)
ISTA 3B series ISTA 3B (≤70kg, LTL freight package (truck transportation)
ISTA 3E series ISTA 3E (≤70 kg, collective packaging unit for the same product)
ISTA 6 series ISTA 6A (≤70kg, customized by FedEx)
Introduction to some test procedures
1. ISTA3 series test procedures
It is a comprehensive simulation performance test, which simulates the damage to the package caused by various movements, forces, transportation conditions, transportation environment and the sequence of occurrence in the laboratory. Used in a variety of transportation environments, such as: different vehicle types, different intermodal routes, and different handling processes. Including random vibration, drop tests at different heights, and/or environmental handling tests, such as damp heat or extreme cold/freezing points.
1. ISTA 3A is for packages that have a mass of not more than 70kg (150 pounds) and are transported in parcels

2、ISTA 3B LTL package.
A comprehensive simulation test for transportation using a car (truck) delivery and distribution system. The distribution system has different types of packages, usually from multiple shippers to multiple different destinations, and mixed transportation. This type of transportation is called LTL transportation.

ISTA 6 series test procedure
The ISTA 6 series test procedure is jointly developed by ISTA and ISTA member companies. Currently, there are ista6-Boxing (Amazon), ista6--S1.O.C. (T Mason), ISTA 6 FEDEX-A (FedEx).

2、ISTA 6-Amazon.com-SIOC (customized by Amazon member)
The test standard is an agreement that Amazon and its suppliers’ products need to follow in Amazon’s operating environment. The packaging products used for "own packaging and transportation" are transported to the end user through the Amazon distribution system to simulate the test---that is, the products of the supplier, manufacturer or manufacturer are placed in their own packaging containers and transported to the Amazon distribution center and then passed through Parcel or LTL overseas. It is mainly aimed at individually packaged products that weigh less than 23kg and are transported in packages without pallets when they reach consumers. According to the packaging size, weight, delivery method and product category, the products are divided into 8 categories of Type A~Type H for testing. The details are as follows:
Serial number | Classification | Specific instructions |
1 | Type A | Individually packaged products that weigh less than 23kg and are transported in packages without pallets when delivered to consumers. |
2 | Type B | Individually packaged products that the weight is 23kg~43kg and are transported in packages without pallets when delivered to consumers. |
3 | Type C | Individually packaged products that weigh greater than or equal to 43kg and are transported in packages without pallets when delivered to consumers. |
4 | Type D | Individually packaged products that weigh less than 43kg and are transported in packages without pallets when delivered to consumers. |
5 | Type E | Individually packaged products with a weight greater than or equal to 43kg, delivered to consumers without a pallet, and transported with LTL shipment. |
6 | Type F | Individually packaged products delivered to consumers without a pallet, and transported with LTL shipment. |
7 | Type G | It is suitable for TY/display, without pallet, weight less than 68kg and perimeter less than or equal to 4.19m, individually packaged products with LTL shipment. |
8 | Type H | It is suitable for TY/display, without pallet, weight greater than or equal to 68kg and perimeter greater than 4.19m, individually packaged products with LTL shipment. |
The main test items are as follows:
Serial number | Test items | Remark |
1 | Temperature and humidity treatment
2 | Free fall | |
3 | Vibration (with/without load)
4 | Free fall | |
5 | Rotating edge drop | Flat/Long Strip Packaging |
6 | Tip over | Flat/Long Strip Packaging |
7 | Concentrated impact | Flat packaging |
8 | Bridging impact | Long strip packaging |
9 | Leak test | Liquid packaging |
3、ISTA6-Amazon.com-Over Boxing (customized by Amazon member)
The ISTA6-Amazon.com-Over Boxing test is mainly for a single retail packaged product to be placed in the main shipping container alone, with padding (air pillow or kraft paper) or multiple independent retail packaged products added. Products that pass the ISTA6-Amazon.com-Over Boxing test are to be delivered to terminal consumers from the Amazon website through a package delivery system, which may include air, rail, or truck models. For single packaged products weighing less than 23kg.
