The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) that will reduce exposure to five persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) chemical substances. These chemicals will accumulate in the environment over time, so they may pose potential risks to people who come into contact with them. These rules became effective on February 5, 2021 and will be implemented step by step from March 8.
The main uses and control requirements are as follows:
Substances | Rugulation | Limit | Scope | Uses | Activity | Effective date | Exemptions |
Decabromodiphenyl ether(DecaBDE) CAS No.:1163-19-5 | 40CFR 751.405 | Manufacturing and processing of DecaBDE or DecaBDE-containing products or articles | DecaBDE is used as an additive flame retardant in plastic enclosures for televisions, cormputers, audio and video equipment, textiles and upholstered articles, wire and cables for communication and eleatronic equipment, and other applications. DecaBDE is also used as a flame retardant for mutiple applications for aerospace and automotive vehioles, including replacement parts for aircraft and cars | Manufacture /Processing | March 8, 2021 | Recycled plastics and products made from such recycled plastics, if new decabromodiphenyl ether is not added during the recycling or reproduction process. | |
