The Austrian WEEE follows the principles of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Certain substances are used in electronic equipment that may damage the environment and even threaten human health if disposed of with general waste. Therefore, the European Union's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires such equipment to be marked with the above symbol as a reminder not to dispose of such equipment as unsorted waste.
The directive also requires member states of the European Union to achieve a high recovery rate for such equipment in order to adopt environmentally friendly disposal methods. As for the success of the policy , it depends on the active cooperation of all users.
What are WEEEs?
1. For scrapped electrical and electronic equipment, "waste" was defined in detail in Directive 75/442/EEC , and it was modified in Directive 91/156/EEC. Scrapping actually refers to all types of products in
Annex I of the WEEE Directive . Even if the product has not reached the end of its useful life, it is considered waste as long as it is discarded by consumers. 2. From August 13, 2005, manufacturers of electronic and electrical equipment circulating in the EU market must legally assume the responsibility to pay for the recycling of scrapped products. At the same time, EU member states are obliged to formulate their own electronic and electrical product recycling plans. Establish relevant supporting recycling facilities to enable end users of electrical and electronic products to dispose of waste equipment conveniently and free of charge.
