ACMA seeks comments on electromagnetic compatibility EMC regulatory arrangements Release Time:2023-12-08

Recently, the Australian Communications and Media Authority ACMA solicited opinions from the public on the update of the current electromagnetic compatibility EMC regulatory strategy. ACMA will repeal the Radiocommunication (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Standards 2017 and the Radiocommunication Labeling (Electromagnetic Compatibility) Notification 2017 and incorporate the relevant EMC regulatory obligations into the Radiocommunication Equipment (General) Rules 2021. This solicitation of opinions is open until December 20, 2023.

Regulatory changes mainly include the following aspects:

●Expand the scope of EMC standards for equipment compliance (reference all EMC harmonized standards under the 2014/30/EU directive in EMC regulations);

Whether the current EMC risk levels and regulatory arrangements for vehicles (including electric vehicles) are reasonable and effective;

Remove certain low-power inductive power transmission devices (such as wireless mobile phone chargers, electronic wearable devices, and electric toothbrushes) from high-risk devices;

Reduce the compliance level of some household equipment, etc.;

Category battery-powered devices as low-risk devices.

Electromagnetic compatibility EMC

Electromagnetic compatibility EMC refers to the ability of a device or system to operate in compliance with the requirements in its electromagnetic environment without causing intolerable electromagnetic interference to any equipment in the environment. Therefore, EMC includes two aspects of requirements: on the one hand, it requires that the electromagnetic interference caused by the equipment to the environment during normal operation cannot exceed a certain limit, that is, EMI electromagnetic interference; on the other hand, it requires that the equipment has the ability to respond to electromagnetic interference in the environment. A certain degree of immunity, that is, EMS electromagnetic sensitivity.
