The UK Battery Act follows the principles of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). In the UK, any party that puts goods containing batteries into circulation must bear the cost of recycling and disposing of used batteries. The purpose is to protect the environment by minimizing the harmful impact of waste batteries on the environment.
What is the Battery Act?
Battery
A battery or accumulator is a source of electrical energy produced by the direct conversion of chemical energy and is one or more of the following:
Non-rechargeable or disposable primary battery cells
Secondary batteries as accumulators or rechargeable batteries
if you place batteries (including those in vehicles or appliances) on the UK market.
Type of battery:
◆Industrial batteries: batteries designed for industrial or professional use;
◆Car battery: a battery used to start or ignite a vehicle engine, or to power the lighting of a road vehicle;
PS: The remote control key battery is a portable battery, and the power battery of an electric vehicle is an industrial battery;
◆Portable batteries: sealed, batteries other than non-automotive and industrial batteries under 4 kg;
Who needs to register?
Producer:
◆A company with operations in the UK, importing batteries into the UK and selling them wholesale in the UK;
◆A company operating in the UK, importing laptops with built-in batteries and selling them wholesale in the UK;
◆UK battery manufacturers selling to the public or retailers;
non-producer:
◆companies that import batteries into the UK and then sell them overseas without placing them on the UK market;
◆A company that sells batteries directly to UK consumers from overseas via the internet and does not have a physical presence in the UK;
When is it mandatory?
January 1, 2023
How do I register with the UK Battery Act?
If you do not place more than 1 ton of portable batteries on the market per year:
◆Register with the appropriate environmental regulator;
◆Each year you must submit tonnage and chemical composition at NPWD to confirm the number of batteries you placed on the market in the previous year.
◆The annual fee is £30;
If you put more than 1 ton of portable batteries on the market per year:
◆You can join BCS and pay the annual fee until 15 October before the start of the compliance year (calendar year) ;
