Eu restrictions on PFCAs and PFOA:
Substance | Restriction requirements | Regulatory regulations |
PFCAs and related substances | 1.Shall not be manufactured, or placed on the market as substances on their own from 25 February 2023. 2.Shall not, from 25 February 2023, be used in, or placed on the market in: (a)another substance, as a constituent; (b)a mixture; (c)an article, except if the concentration in the substance, the mixture, or the article is below 25 ppb for the sum of C9-C14 PFCAs and their salts or 260 ppb for the sum of C9-C14 PFCA-related substances. See the text of the regulation | REACH Regulation Annex XVII |
(PFOA), its salts and PFOA-relatedcompounds | 1. Concentrations of PFOA or any of its salts in substances, mixtures or articles equal to or below 0,025 mg/kg (0,0000025 % by weight). 2. Concentrations of PFOA -related substances in substances, mixtures or articles equal to or below 20 mg/kg (0,002 % by weight). See the text of the regulation | POPs Regulation |
Both PFCAs and PFOA are perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS has the characteristics of water resistance, oil resistance, dirt resistance, chemical resistance, temperature resistance, reducing surface friction, and obtaining surface activity. It is widely used in food packaging materials (paper and paperboard for food contact), consumer goods such as antifouling, waterproof fabrics and carpets, leather and clothing, non-stick kitchenware (such as Teflon), polishes, waxes, paints, cleaning products and fire-resistant foams, as well as in building products and healthcare products. PFAS have biopersistence, bioaccumulation and biotoxicity, which have long-term impacts on environmental organisms and human health. Currently, many countries have issued relevant restrictions. Enterprises should pay attention to these restrictions in time to avoid violations.
